I was teen and had been stealing from Mom's purse for a couple of years. One Saturday evening Mom was putting clothes away in my room when she found a $20 I had taken. I didn't know she had found it when she told me Dad wanted to talk with me. I went upstairs and Dad was sitting in the living room and asked me to sit down. He confronted me about the money and said Mom had found it putting my clothes away and was broken-hearted about it. Used to be, Dad would have taken a belt to my behind, but he opened the Bible and showed what will happen to thieves (1 Corinthians 6:10). With compassion, care, and love, my Dad so concerned for my eternal well-being, showed me God's grace as he gently rebuked my sin and I repented in tears. I went downstairs where Mom was doing laundry and apologized and we cried together as she forgave me. The way my parents handled my sin, I experienced grace and found forgiveness from both God and my parents.
